Why Is It Called a Corpse Flower?
The Titan Arum is famous for producing an odor often compared to rotting meat, decaying animals, or other unpleasant scents. While that may not sound appealing, the smell serves an important purpose.
In its native rainforests of western Sumatra, Indonesia, the plant relies on carrion beetles and flesh flies for pollination. To attract these insects, the bloom emits a powerful odor that mimics a dead animal. The plant even generates heat during peak bloom to help spread the scent farther through the air.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event
What makes the Titan Arum so special is its rarity.
The endangered species typically spends seven to ten years or more growing and building energy reserves before producing a bloom, and when it finally opens, the spectacle typically lasts only 24 to 36 hours. Missing the bloom can mean waiting years for another opportunity.
According to McKee Botanical Garden, Princess Pungent arrived in May 2026 as a two-inch sprout and has been rapidly growing as she approaches bloom, reaching 41 inches in just 25 days. Staff have been documenting her progress through social media and live updates.
Why Everyone Is Watching
Corpse flowers have developed something of a cult following around the world.
Whenever one blooms, botanical gardens often see huge crowds and livestreams attract thousands of viewers eager to witness the rare event. Recent blooms in Massachusetts, California, Australia, and Washington, D.C. generated international attention from plant enthusiasts and curious first-time viewers alike.
Now Vero Beach has its own botanical celebrity.
As Princess Pungent prepares to unfurl her enormous deep maroon-colored bloom, visitors have a chance to experience a plant that many people spend their entire lives without seeing in person.
Planning a Visit
McKee Botanical Garden has extended viewing opportunities to allow visitors to witness the bloom as it happens. Because the exact timing remains unpredictable, garden officials recommend checking updates frequently and following the livestream for the latest developments.
